Reminiscences

I have so many wonderful memories over the past 25 years since joining the Buicktown Chapter at a Sloan Museum Auto Fair. Having worked at Buick for over 30 years I wanted to join a club that featured the cars that were built there. However, more important than the cars are all of the great people I have met. I love being a part of the Buicktown family!

The only thing I can say is that I owned a plain Jane 56 Buick, the cheapest car Buick made, for 46 years with no one taking a second look, until Pete Phillips, the editor of the Buick magazine came along published two articles about my 56. It got the top award for unrestored original in South Bend. So then I gave the car to my daughter and son in law and they got another award I Oklahoma City. That’s my story.

Happy Golden Anniversary to the BCA/Buicktown Chapter from the Cushman, Dutrizac and Harris families.

To say that Buicktown was a family to us would be an understatement. My wife’s parents were charter members Bob & Ellen Cushman and Ellen’s brother and sister-in-law were Ray and Genny Dutrizac.

Janie and I will forever be thankful and cherish the wonderful memories spent together with our extended Buick family at the countless National and Regional BCA meets, local car shows, tours and social events. For me, arguably, one of the most memorable times were serving as “Mom’s” Vice-President during her role as chapter president, serving as Regional Meet chairman and, of course, serving on the committee when Buicktown proudly hosted the BCA “Homecoming” National Meet in 2008. Again, congratulations and “thanks for the memories”!!!!!

The Buick club has been a special part of our friends and family for the last several years. We joined shortly after retiring from GM and enjoyed the classic car scene. When we joined I didn’t have a classic Buick but had a 1973 Corvette and a 1976 Oldsmobile, well that didn’t last long. We got the 1977 Buick Regal and enjoyed it, traveling many miles with the BDE. It is still in our Chapter but it became a chore for me work on I knew it needed a new home. We have so many old friends and new one we look forward to seeing them each time we meet. Thanks to all who make that
happen.

Although we have been in BCA National since 1971, it wasn’t until 1987 that we joined Buicktown, that’s when we found a true Buick family. Good times thru the years with friends lost, but always new ones to be had! Congratulations Buicktown on 50 great years!

Antique cars are a very enjoyable hobby. There is more fun when club members get together and plan activities. The Buicktown Chapter is ahead of the game.

Some of the very first were the National shows that were held in Flint-Buicktown in 1971 and 1972. Many types of events followed. Tours, Buick Club Regionals in Holland in 1996, local shows, swap meets, bashes where other chapters participated. Buicktown hosted homecomings in 1988 and 1996, Centennial in 2003 and GM in 2008.

After all the hard work, Denny Meyer introduced Ladies Night to be held each May. All of our meetings, picnics, and holidays are fun. Buicktown is the best!

We could not ask for a better club to belong too. We felt like a big family from the day we joined right through today

My Dad was hired at Buick in 1949, and often told me that, when he retired, he hoped to buy a Buick from that year, and join the Buick Club! That dream was never realized, but Becky and I joined the club in 1999, and have carried forward his spirit. I remember going to an early meet, possibly the first national meet here in Flint in 1971, at the Administration Building on Hamilton.

Our neighbor Jim Brayton, a former Director, hosted one of the Christmas parties at his home and invited us to attend. This led to us restoring our 1979 Buick Century Turbo Coupe and starting to attend BCA Nationals and local meets. Our first National Meet was in Virginia in 2000. We had a mini caravan with Jim Brayton in his 40.

Soon after there was much talk of the upcoming Buick 100th and that is where we had our first experience working with Buicktown members. Months of planning and hard work paid off, with everyone carrying out their responsibilities.

As members still working, Becky and I had to take our vacations to “work” for the 100th! So many people became new Buicktown friends, Manners, Meyers and Minches to old friends Brayton and Bonk – we were gratified to see the end result: A great birthday party for Buick!
